The business began in 2018 with a small lathe and bandsaw to make bowls, pens/pencils and wood beads . A friend and local firewood source, Dan the Firewood Man, had found hardwood trees in Boise cut during expansion or due to disease and cut them into 16-18 inch sections to split and sell for firewood. We purchased these logs before he split them and began learning how to harvest the bowl blanks to best highlight the wood grain and unique features. Although a few bowls are turned immediately (turning green wood is enjoyable but is followed by a long, nail biting drying process that can result in significant cracking), almost all are set in a shady spot of our barn to dry for one to two years. The bowl blanks that make it through this long drying process are then turned into bowls. And those that are too severely cracked are cut into smaller pieces and used for jewelry or other fun decor items.
The shop has grown since that first year and now includes a larger lathe and bandsaw to increase the size of the blanks that can be cut and turned. My knowledge of preparing and turning wood has also grown. And I have come to accept a percent of the blanks will crack too much to use for bowls.
In addition to bowl turning, I make a wide variety of turned pens. Several can be found at the Trading Post in idaho City. I enjoy making Shop/Sketch pencils since I use them myself. These include very thick pencil lead in three sizes. 2mm, 3mm and 5.6mm. Finally, no more breaking leads!!!!! These items make great gifts for other woodworkers, carpenters, artists and many more. They are also great groomsmen gifts to compliment the wedding party jewelry I make!!!
A new item I have recently added is charcuterie boards. These natural edge pieces make stunning serving plates for many occasions. Some include metal accents.
